A snowmobiler from Alberta was killed by an avalanche on Boulder Mountain on Saturday, February 15.
A statement from the Revelstoke RCMP detachment said Mounties and local Search and Rescue personnel were called to a report of an avalanche on Boulder Mountain at approximately 3:30 pm that afternoon.
“Boulder Mountain was extremely busy with numerous snowmobilers,” Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said in a statement released on Sunday. “A group of four snowmobilers from Alberta were together when an avalanche was triggered.
“Two of the males were caught in the avalanche. One… was quickly retrieved by members of the group, however, one male was buried under a large amount of snow and when located was unconscious. Local Search and Rescue attended by helicopter to assist and transport the male.”
The 35-year-old man who was found unconscious succumbed to his injuries. The second man survived with non-life-threatening injuries. All snowmobilers were equipped with the appropriate safety gear, beacons and avalanche training.
The name of the deceased has not been released.
The BC Coroner’s Service is investigating this incident.
