Ten squash players from the Revelstoke Racquet Den travelled to Vernon last weekend to play in the Winter Carnival Open Squash Tournament. Divisions included Men’s Open and A-level, and Mens and Women’s B, C, and D.

According to Racquet Den President Kevin Dorrius, Revelstoke Squash players have come a long way over the years.

“Other clubs used to see that they were playing a Revelstoke player and assume an automatic win,” he said Saturday.

Not anymore!  Playing in the Men’s B+ Division, Scott Waddingham was contending for first place, but unfortunately had to pull out in the second game due to injury. Rico Petrucci placed second place in the Mens C division, Karen McColl placed second in the Ladies C, and Kim Wright placed third in Ladies D.

Ian McHarg of Vernon, a Mens A level player for the past eight years, remarked on the progress of the Revelstoke club.

“We see Revelstoke as a competitive threat. No longer someone we will walk on – out of the minors and into the majors.”

Duncan Macdonald, owner of Swingers Squash Club in Nelson, agreed.  He remembered Revelstoke players showing up at a tournament in Nakusp several years ago with “old school visors.”

“Revelstoke players have improved a lot.  (They are) one of the better clubs to support the tournaments.”
