Revelstoke’s ethnic and cultural diversity will be celebrated this Saturday through a special Carousel of Nations event at the Community Centre.
Organized by Okanagan College, the City of Revelstoke, School District 19 and 10 other organizations, this unique three-hour festival will celebrate who we are through stories, slide presentations, music, crafts, displays, dance and food.
“This is a very special event,” says Mary Kline, one of the organizers. “This came about as a result of last year’s discussions about racism and intolerance.”
Starting at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 6, the Carousel of Nations is a one-of-a-kind family event that has something for everyone. Young children may be especially enthralled by the stories from Africa, Japan and Canada’s First Nations. The stories run continuously throughout the event. There will also be travel slide presentations in the Seniors’ Centre ranging from our multicultural local history to visits by Revelstokians to Turkey, Hungary, France, Africa and Antarctica.
On stage in Multi-purpose Room No. 3 there will be a performance by the Highland Pipe band, a Zumba Demonstration, dancing by The Metis Jiggers, a dance troupe from Golden, Canadian folk music by Steve Smith and a Scottish Dancing Workshop.
You can also sample food from Canada, Poland, India, England, Italy and China. There will also be crafts, displays and many other activities for adults and kids, brought to you the City, Okanagan College, SD 19, the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy, the Child Care Society, the Okanagan Regional Library, the RSS Multicultural group, Parks Canada, the Revelstoke Museum, the Railway Museum, Columbia Basin Trust, EZ Rock and Pharmasave.
