CBC today announced the return of radio programming from Kelowna to the City of Revelstoke beginning on January 2, 2014.
“We have heard the voices and passion of loyal CBC Radio listeners in Revelstoke loud and clear,” Johnny Michel, senior managing director of CBC British Columbia and Alberta, said in a statement relessed late on Thursday afternoon.
“The move back to Kelowna’s programming to Revelstoke just reinforces CBC’s commitment to provide the most relevant content for our many communities.”
Revelstoke was one of the cities in the established listening area for CBC Kamloops, a new radio and digital bureau that opened in September 2012 as part of CBC/Radio-Canada’s 5-year strategy 2015: Everyone, Every Way. CBC Kamloops launched a new morning show, Daybreak Kamloops, with host Shelley Joyce as part of the new service.
CBC British Columbia responded to residents’ call for a change back to the original programming content they received from CBC Kelowna, including morning show Daybreak South with host Chris Walker. The proximity of Revelstoke between Kamloops and Kelowna presented a unique situation appropriate for this move. An online poll was created for the residents of Revelstoke who voted to move back to the Kelowna programming.
“This was a vigorous community initiative, with the citizens of Revelstoke strongly expressing their connection to the Kelowna broadcast area,” Mayor David Raven was quoted as saying in the statement. “The City of Revelstoke is pleased that the appeals from the community were recognized.”
The CRTC approved the change to CBC’s broadcasting license in the area on December 11, 2013.
Both Daybreak in Kamloops and Kelowna were ranked #1 in their markets in the Fall 2013 Bureau of Broadcast Measurements Survey.
