South Revelstoke residents got an extra-rude Christmas gift from thieves on Christmas Eve when they discovered that every single mailbox at Southside Supermarket had been opened and the contents stolen.

Although Canada Post and local RCMP were unavailable for comment mailbox key-holders were upset.

“I can’t believe someone would do this kind of thing,” said one woman as she surveyed the boxes on Sunday.

William Haworth said he went to Southside at about 3 pm on Christmas Eve to “pick up the mail and do the usual things” and found all the doors to the mailboxes were open and a hand-lettered sign saying only, “Sorry for any inconvenience. Please pick up mail at  main Post Office with photo ID. Thanks.”

“Whoever did it had to be pretty organized,” he said. “I don’t think this was just a couple of kids.”

Haworth said while “you hear about this kind of thing happening in apartment buildings,” he had never heard of anything like this happening in Revelstoke before.

Could it happen again? Who knows? But Haworth noted that the mailboxes “were secured with little more than a 1/4-inch plastic latch.”

The crime is, presumably, being investigated.
