The 2013 Community Literacy Award winner is Anne Cooper, retiring SD 19 superintendent, is the 2013 Community Literacy Award winner, the local branch of the Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy announced Sunday afternoon.
“Anne has been a provincial champion for the importance of integrating early learning and community literacy within the public education system,” CBAL Coordinator Tracy Spanner said in a statement. “She has actively promoted the concept of literacy being critically important for everyone from infants to seniors. Anne has ensured that the School District is a true collaborator and supporter of literacy in Revelstoke.”
The announcement came, appropriately enough, on International Literacy Day, which was celebrated on Sunday, September 8.
In addition, five community members are also being recognized as 2013 Champions for Literacy. They are:
- Lucie Bergeron is recognized for her volunteer work in Okanagan College’s Volunteer Tutor Program. In her three years in the program, Lucie has empowered a learner to develop a love of reading and learning and has encouraged him in reaching his goals.
- Allison Just was nominated for going above and beyond to support the POPS (Parents of Primary Students) program at Arrow Heights Elementary.
- Sandra Painter was nominated for her continued engagement, and dedication to making an impact as a long-serving volunteer in the One-to-One Children’s Reading Program.
- Tammy Tomm was nominated as a Champion for Literacy for her innovative approach using technology to engage youth in the Revelstoke Reads initiative.
- George Winingder was nominated for his exceptional dedication to the English as a Second Language Settlement Assistance Program. George has volunteered to tutor two learners annually since 2006. He is a kind, reliable and patient volunteer who makes a real difference.
This year’s Champions for Literacy and the recipient of the Community Literacy Award will be recognized at a tea to be hosted this fall. The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy looks forward to annually offering the Community Literacy Award in celebration of International Literacy Day.
“We would like to thank each of our Champions for their contributions to learning in our community,” Tracy said in the statement.
