Bingo-mania!

By David F. Rooney

The Knights of Pythias Bingo at the Community Centre has been the scene of some pretty intense action lately as scores of new players have been showing up, daubers in hand, with their fingers crossed for good luck. What they’re looking for is money, of course; and lately they’ve been hoping to be the one who cries out, “Bingo!” and wins a jackpot worth more than $23,000.

On Thursday night more than 116 people turned out and while a number of people won prizes worth hundreds of dollars, including a certain nameless businessman who enjoys his work and his play and won not just once, but twice — nobody won the BIG prize. That is still up for grabs. The next chance Bingo players will have to win big is on Jan. 7.

“Usually we get 40 or 50 players,” said one Knight on Thursday evening. “People are coming to play hoping they’ll be the big winner.”

And they’re likely to keep coming in to play on Thursday evenings.

“I think the big prize is going to build for a while,” said bingo player Kirstin Renner. “It’s pretty crazy odds to hit bingo on a certain number.”

Hmmm… more than $23,000…wouldn’t that be a great way to ring in the New Year?

Here are a few photos of Thursday’s Bingo action:

And for Carolyn Duncan and Christy Schibild there was lots of fun watching the intense action. The two women have children in the Acrobats Club which has concession rights as a fundraiser every two weeks. David F. Rooney photo
