Got an old snowboard, a pair of skis, skates or other winter sporting gear languishing in a closet somewhere? Rayni Motiuk can help you turn them into crisp, cold cash at her Re Psyched Consignment Sporting Goods shop.
“I’m sure I can fill a niche,” the 28-year-old businesswoman said in an interview Tuesday. “Everyone has something stashed away.”
Given the cost of brand-new, state-of-the-art, latest-whatever sporting goods, finding a great pair of skis or boots can make the difference between watching people ski down the slopes at RMR and hitting them yourself. And that’s what Motiuk is counting on.
Her small shop at 204 First Street East is bright, sunny and, she hopes, will become a a must-visit place for sports enthusiasts of all kinds. She’s thinking ahead, too.
“If you need tape for your hockey sticks, good luck finding it in town,” she said, adding that she has ordered a shipment for hockey players and/or hockey moms tired of driving to Salmon Arm or Vernon to buy a roll of tape.
And in summer, she’ll retire the sports equipment and offer up summer-season goods such as hiking boots, rock climbing equipment, tennis and badminton racquets and other kinds of fair-weather sporting gear. In town for the Glacier Challenge and you forgot/lost/destroyed your glove? The chances are good that Re Psyched will have what you need.
It’s a good idea and one she hopes will work in this increasingly tourism- and sports-oriented town.
“I’m a hard worker,” she said. “But I’m really tired of doing stupid job after stupid job after stupid job only to get laid off. My parents had a home-based business (a garden centre) and I learned a lot from them.”
Re Psyched’s official opening is De c.15, but Motiuk is already welcoming customers into our store.
