Don’t miss Thursday’s Town Hall meeting!
Mayor David Raven, members of City Council and senior municipal staff will be the focus of attention at Thursday evening’s Town Hall meeting at the new Performing Arts Centre.
The purpose of the Town Hall Meeting, scheduled for 7 to 9 pm, is for Council to provide an overview of each department they represent outlining current goals and objectives. City Council is in the initial stages of budget preparation and would like to provide an opportunity for public comments or questions related to these or other topics.

Help your kids’ grains to grow
Got kids? Got young kids and do you wonder if their brains are developing as they should? The Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy may be able to help!
The CBAL is sponsoring a special workshop on November 7 led by a special education teacher, author and motivational speaker Gary Anaka, known to many as The Brain Coach.
This event, to be held between 7 and 9 pm in the Common room at Begbie View Elementary, is intended for parents and grandparents, caregivers, child care professionals, early learning service providers, teachers and anyone else who spends time with young children.
Among the topic the Vancouver Island-based Anaka will explore are:
- How movement grows the child’s brain;
- Why play is the natural and genuine way the brain learns best;
- Why imagination and creativity are critical to promote intelligence;
- 10 strategies to build a brain for a lifetime of optimal performance; and
- Ways to provide experiences that support language, emotions, math, creativity and logic.

RSS students will head to Cuba and Moscow
The RSS Senior Boys Volleyball Team has an opportunity for some real beach volleyball next year when they travel to Havana and Varadero Beach, Cuba, for sports and culture festival.
The team will fly to the Caribbean nation on February 2 and will return seven days later.
School District 19 trustees approved the trip during their Monday morning meeting.
They won’t be the only high school students heading out of town that month.
The RSS Senior Band is planning a six-day trip to Moscow, Idaho, for the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival February 22 – 27.

Learning Improvement Fund dispersements approved
School District 19 has received $127,866 from the province for its Learning Improvement Fund.
The money will be used to benefit teachers and support staff.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire
Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke from fires on Mount Mackenzie this winter.
Revelstoke Mountain Resort will be conducting maintenance burning of wood waste debris piles between October 25 and October 31.
Members of Revelstoke’s Initial Attack Crew will conduct the burn. The resort is scheduled to open for the winter season on December 1.

Building permits are down
The City approved 11 building permits worth $194,000 last September.
That brings to the total value of building permits so far this year to $8.5 million, which is way down from last year.
In September 2011 building permits were worth $1.1 million. And the total by this same time last year was $22.8 million.
