Grizzly Bear Run was fun for all

By David F. Rooney

This year’s Grizzly Bear Run saw 134 runners from across all age groups participate in its 5K and 12K runs.

This year’s run was quite a bit different from those of the past.,

“It’s a community race now,” Jarrett Spannier of the Alpine Runners said of the event. “Now people run for fun instead of points as we used to.”

In fact, this year’s run was organized by the Revelstoke Credit Union, which did a masterful job. There were prizes for the top runners and scads of door prizes for everyone.

“The business community really pitched in with prizes,” said RCU’s Todd Webber.

Kudos to the Credit Union and Alpine Runners as well as the following businesses and organizations: Legends-n-Heros, Modern Bakery, Roxy Theatre, Revelstoke Aquatic Centre, Main Street Café, Wild Flower Wellness, Helios, Skookum, Pam’s Kitchen, Trans Canada Fitness, Flowt, Pharmasave, Chantilly Kitchen Bed ‘n’ Bath, Grizzly Auto, Mountain Goodness, Grizzly Books, Villiage Idiot, Home Hardware, Revelstoke Grizzlies Junior B Hockey Club and New Balance footwear.

It’s a bird! It’s a plan! No… it’s Jarrett Spannier who was ready for a super-good time at the Grizzly Run. “It’s a community race now,” he said of the 12-year-old event. “Now people run for fun instead of points as we used to.” Jarrett wasn’t the only person in costume. There were a couple of fairies, a few people wearing fright wigs and at least one where’s an artificial grass skirt. David F. Rooney photo

Mmmmm. Burgers… hit dogs… cookies and fruit… The Revelstoke Credit Union, which organized this year’s run, did a superlative job. They seemed to think of everything that was required to make the Grizzly Run a true community-based event. David F. Rooney photo

The Revelstoke Grizzlies pose with Credit Union staff who put a lot of hours into ensuring that the Grizzly Run was a success. Then, they posed with some the young kids who also ran. “The Credit Union, the Grizzlies and the really-fit people of Revelstoke showed an outstanding display of community pride, athleticism and collaboration,” Steve Smith, the Junior B hockey team’s volunteer business manager said in an e-mail to The Current. “Good work everyone at the RCU Grizzly Bear Run. Congrats to Crystal Robichaud, the sponsors and prize donators, and all who were involved in making this a memorable event. Thanks from the Grizzlies for involving us.” Steve Smith photos
