Revelstoke Secondary School hosted a cross-country run on the trails at the Mount Macpherson skiing area on Wednesday that saw local boys and girls race against teams from high schools in Vernon, Salmon Arm and Pleasant Valley.
The top three girls were: Emi Simm of Shuswap Middle School with a time of 17.27; Sarah Baily of Fulton Secondary, 17:40; and Delyth Harper of Revelstoke in 18:07. The top three boys were Matt Midasi of Vernon Secondary in 23:02; Andres Pike of Salmon Arm Secondary, 23:14; and Steven Petterson, also of Salmon Arm Secondary, in 23:47. The top two Revelstoke boys were Geordie Orom in fourth place with 24:01 and Marco Schober in fifth with a time of 24:07.
“In total, we had 63 runners from 6 of the schools in our zone — Shuswap Middle School (SMS), Fulton Secondary (FSS), Revelstoke Secondary (RSS), Salmon Arm Secondary (SASS), Pleasant Valley Secondary (PVSS), and Vernon Secondary (VSS),” RSS English teacher and Cross-Country Coach Jeff Wilson said in an e-mail Wednesday evening.
RSS won the Junior girls’ category with 25 pts and SASS was second with 53 points. SASS won the Junior Boys’ category with a near-perfect score of 16 points. In the senior teams, SASS won the girls with 35 points followed by VSS with 61 pts. In the senior boys category, SASS won again with 26 points followed by Revelstoke Secondary with 44 points.
“For our team, ‘running up’ was particularly important,” Wilson said.”For example, Trevor Gallicano didn’t have a time that posed a threat to the top senior boys, but when he came across the finish line (to the cheers of all the other competitors) he helped the senior boys secure the second place spot that day — a fine accomplishment for a Grade 8 boy. For RSS, the other notable finishes in the individual category were Delyth
Harper (2nd Junior, 3rd Overall), Britt Evans (3rd Junior), John Yakielashek (3rd in the Grade 8 category) and Megan Evans, who placed second in the Grade 8 category. Her time was 18:48.”
“I’d like to put a thank-you for all of the teachers, parents, coaches, and students who helped out with the race. Tim Horton’s was also a great help providing food and snacks for after our run.”
