Recent thunderstorms have kept crews in the Southeast Fire Centre busy fighting dozens of new fires. Crews have responded to 34 new fires in the past week; 29 of those were caused by lightning.
A statement from the Southeast Fire Centre in Castlegar said Friday that the 38-hectare fire burning southeast of Creston on Skimmer Horn Ridge is located on steep, difficult terrain. Although the fire is not threatening any communities or structures, it is highly visible to surrounding communities. Today, 35 firefighting personnel are working on the fire, supported by four helicopters.
A 10-hectare fire is burning west of Kaslo in the Keen Creek area. While no structures or communities are threatened, smoke is visible to surrounding areas. Reported on Aug. 8, the fire is burning within a logging cut block. Twenty-three firefighting personnel and one piece of heavy equipment are currently onsite.
Several other spot-sized fires (less than one hectare) are burning as a result of recent thunderstorms within the fire centre. Most of these fires are located in remote areas and are not affecting nearby communities.
There are currently no fires in the Revelstoke region.
The Southeast Fire Centre would like to thank everyone who reported wildfires this week. Early reporting is an important step in ensuring our success in extinguishing fires while they are still small.
