TALKING ROCK GOLF RESORT — Wendy Toyer, executive director for the ALS Society of BC, presents golf pro John Franks of the Revelstoke Golf Course with a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the ALS Society. She was thanking him and 79 other pros and juniors from 37 golf courses who participated in the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS presented at the Talking Rocking Golf Resort near Chase by the uniPHARM & Medicine Centre Pharmacies Charitable Foundation. They golfed from sunrise to sunset, raising awareness and funds for ALS. Franks himself played 163 holes on June 24. ALS, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immobilized or deceased within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. The ALS Society of BC was founded by ALS patients, their family members and health care professionals to meet the physical and emotional needs of people with ALS and their caregivers. For over 30 years, the society has helped thousands of patients and their families, by providing direct services, information and support including an equipment loan program and assistance with transportation. The average cost per patient for essential medical equipment is $147,000.
