Glacier National Park’s Hermit Trail, and a portion of the surrounding area, will be temporarily closed effective 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, until further notice (please see below for a map of the closure area), says a statement issued by Parks Canada today.
The statement said the closure is to ensure the safe removal, by detonation, of an unexploded military ordnance fired as part of annual Avalanche Control Program. It did not say how long the explosive had been in the area.
The Trans-Canada Highway remains open to all travellers during this time.
Parks Canada’s Avalanche Control Section operates the world’s largest mobile Avalanche Control Program in Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park, in partnership with the Department of National Defence. This has been a very successful partnership for almost 50 years, since the Trans-Canada Highway was opened through Rogers Pass in 1962.
