Shane McCallum and his wife and parents are lucky to be alive after they were sideswiped by a transport truck while waiting to turn left off the Trans-Canada Highway for what they hoped would be a relaxing dinner at the Great White North Restaurant.
“Fortunately, no one was hurt but he peeled the side off the car,” McCallum, a local software programmer and owner of Rev Software (www.revsoftware.ca) who, among other things, built The Revelstoke Current website.
He said he was preparing to turn when the truck, which was carrying a turbine from Calgary for a run-of-river project in Campbell River, tried to pass them on the right. Instead he hit the vehicle which also contained his wife Katy and his parents Craig and Tracy McCallum of Rossland. As you can see in the images below, the truck badly damaged the Honda Fit when it sideswiped it at about 6:20 pm.
The driver of the T-Lane Transport truck from Mission, BC, then lost control and slid into the ditch where the massive vehicle rolled onto its side. He apparently was not injured.
McCallum said people from the area immediately came to the scene and told him they had long wanted a left-turning lane to help prevent accidents at that location.
