Several facilities and campgrounds in Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Parks have re-opened after being cleared of trees and debris brought down by Thursday’s high winds.
Some areas will remain closed over the long weekend in the interest of public safety, and Parks Canada staff are continuing to clear debris from trails and facilities.
In an e-mail received this morning, local resident Jackie Morris said: “A trail crew person told me that a hiker coming down from Avalanche Crest trail encountered 120 downed trees. One tent in the campground had six trees land on it but nobody was in the tent. There are some old growth sub-alpine trees in this valley that were/are hundreds of years old.”
Here is, according to Parks Canada staff, the current status of various popular trails and facilities:
Glacier National Park
Illecillewaet Campground — CLOSED until further notice. Trails based out of Illecillewaet Campground are currently being assessed
for damage and updates will be posted.
Asulkan Trail — CLOSED until further notice.
Loop Brook Campground —OPEN
Sir Donald Campground — CLOSED
Hemlock Grove Boardwalk — The boardwalk itself is CLOSED but the picnic area is OPEN
Rogers Pass Discovery Centre — OPEN
Mount Revelstoke National Park
Skunk Cabbage Boardwalk — The boardwalk itself is CLOSED but the picnic area is OPEN
Giant Cedars Boardwalk — OPEN
The Meadows in the Sky Parkway — OPEN; all trails are also OPEN
