Wednesday, October 6 was a fantastic, sunny day for Revelstoke Secondary’s fall cross-country running race. RSS hosted 68 runners from across our zone this year, and the runners tested themselves on the 5k Loop up in Mt. Revelstoke National Park.
This race is certainly one of the tougher courses on the circuit, but the runners from RSS proved that they were certainly ‘in the running’ for this year’s North Zone champions.
Our junior and senior girls combined to form a single team that beat Salmon Arm and Vernon in the senior girls’ team category, and their individual results were equally impressive. In their category, Britt and Megan Evans were 1st and 2nd respectively. Alei Mohr placed 5th, Florina Beglinger was 8th, and Hanna Thompson finished in 10th place.
Maxine Opatril also had a notable finish winning 3rd place in the Grade 8 category.
The RSS Junior boys also did very well. Dominic Unterberger led the way with a 3rd place finish in this category. Right behind Dominic was John Yakilashek in 4th and Jacob Wallach in 5th place.
Other top ten finishes for junior boys included Wyatt Riegel in 7th place and Rhys Evans in 8th. Rhys is in Grade 8 at RSS this year, so he also took home the 1st place ribbon in the Grade 8 category as well.
With five runners in the top ten, these boys also took home 1st place in the team category for the second time in two weeks. Way to go, Boys!
It wasn’t just the sun and the results that made this day special for the runners. A big thank-you needs to go out to Parks Canada, Tim Horton’s, Cooper’s Foods, Revelstoke Secondary, Revelstoke Alpine Runners and all of the volunteers who helped make this race a success.
