On Thursday, May 10th The Have a Heart Radiothon will be live from 6am-4pm on 106.1 FM.
Every year, CKCR (The Big R) team up with Community Foundation and Interior Health to fund raise for one or two items we need at the hospital to continue the proper care our community needs. Over the past four years, this event has brought in over $40,000 to help purchase the apparatus that is determined to be necessary.
This year we are raising funds for the purchase of a dental cart and some dental equipment sets so that standard dentistry services will be re-implemented back to the Queen Victoria Hospital OR.
Historically, dentistry services were provided here by several of the local dentists in conjunction with facility based anesthetists and nurses. Unfortunately this gradually became unsustainable for our local dentists for a number of reasons and the service was eventually lost. In recent years medical staff, nursing and Julie Lowes have been working to find ways to return this service to the community and with our local dentists who all committed themselves to supporting the program, this program could be reinstated for the betterment of our dental health in the case of an emergency.
Rough estimates indicate that there are 6 to 9 pediatric cases per month that are travelling out of town for standard dental care that only required either general anesthesia or IV sedation but no specialty dentistry work.
Other cases that are currently being referred out include dental extractions such as wisdom teeth and another population that was identified as difficult to provide dental care for was the geriatric population at Mt Cartier Court.
The purchase of a new dental cart and some dental sets is the next step for us to get set up and ready to start again!
There will be a live auction, where bidders can call 250-837-2149 and bid on the item they wish to have as well as a group of wonderful volunteers in the parking lot of Save-On-Foods collecting donations!
Let’s “Have a Heart” Thursday, May 10th!
