The United Church and Revelstoke for Refugees are jointly holding a vigil this Sunday, February 5, to remember the victims of Monday’s massacre at the Centre Culturel Islamique du Quebec.
The vigil will be held at Grizzly Plaza at 7 pm – not at 5 pm as was erroneously stated. Candles will be provided.
Our Muslim brothers and sisters have long felt threatened and harassed. Until now the threats directed at this peaceful community of New Canadians have been just that – threats. However, now the massacre of six men who were praying at the mosque when they were attacked by an armed man ratchets up the tension and fear experienced by Canadian Muslims.
This vigil will demonstrate our compassion and willingness to stand in solidarity with them.
Alexandre Bissonnette, a 27-year-old Laval University student. He has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder while using a restricted firearm, initially reported to be a Kalashnikov assault rifle.
Bissonnette made a brief court appearance at 6 pm ET Monday. His next court appearance is set for Feb. 21.
