Szigmond (Ziggy) Varady passed away peacefully on November 14, 2016, at Queen Victoria Hospital. A Memorial will be planned for a future date in the spring of 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, #202 – 1835 Gordon Drive, Kelowna, B.C. V1Y 3H5, in memory of Ziggy.
Ziggy was born in Papa, Hungary, on November 15, 1936. He was forced to flee Hungary in 1956 after the failed Hungarian Revolution, and in 1957 he landed in Vancouver ready to start a new life as a free man. By 1958 he had made his way to Revelstoke, and before long he started his career in the forest industry. Ziggy soon became a well-respected, hard-working tree faller, and worked for many years for D & A Logging in Revelstoke, and eventually retired in 2001. He was well known in the community for his kind heart and generosity, always up for coffee and a game of crib, or just a story. Ziggy will be missed by all who knew him, and will be forever loved by his family and friends.
Ziggy was predeceased by his father, Szigmond, mother Julianna, seven brothers and sisters. He is survived by one sister, Ibolyka in Papa, Hungary; daughter Judy of Kelowna, sons John of Gibsons and Rick of Burnaby; grandchildren: Jeremy of Oyama, Josh of Kelowna, Darren of Burnaby and Courtney of Gibsons; great grandchildren Jaylen and Issiah of Oyama.
