The picturesque heart of the downtown core is where the magic happens on Saturday, December 10, as a Miracle on Mackenzie casts a Christmas spell for the children of Revelstoke.
From 3 pm – 5 pm a new Christmas tradition is being created — one that involves groups such as the Community Band, the Revelstoke Children’s Choir, Elevation Dance Academy and children from local elementary schools. They will all be blended into a story about Mr and Mrs Santa Claus.
This is a far cry from the tired Santa Claus Parade that had virtually run out of steam over the last couple of years with fewer and fewer floats and thinning crowds of onlookers.
“What is Christmas about,” asks a statement from the Chamber of Commerce. “Well, that depends on who you ask. It’s different for everyone. We all have our fun traditions during the holiday season that we hold near and dear to our hearts. Whether it is sitting by a window and looking at the snow talking to your mom, Reading stories and baking a gingerbread house with Grandma and Grandpa; Dad’s ugly sweater or tie he wears every year that he thinks is hilarious, volunteering and giving back to the community or maybe it’s some special time you take for yourself to reflect on the ones that you love; we all have our cherished moments.
“The Miracle on Mackenzie is an event that focuses on those moments. Of course it has some bright lights, a horse and sleigh and, of course, a visit from St. Nicholas himself and his better half — Mrs. Claus! How will they arrive? Well, that is the secret; there is an important message on how they find each other! The Clauses will need help from the children of Revelstoke… but that’s all we can hint at.”
The Elevation Dance Academy will be out to showcase their amazing talents, the Community Band and the Revelstoke Children’s Choir will work together to create that perfect holiday score; Joanne Stacey, Charlene Foisy and Janine Carey-Bourke will be performing their wonderful music, Steve Smith will be joining us, the Begbie Elementary Choir and Arrow Heights students will recite their Christmas poems.
Many groups will be helping out: the Grad Class of RSS, Tim Hortons will provide free hot chocolate and coffee for the onlookers, Southside will give away goodies, People’s Drug Mart and The Girl Guides will tea up with Conversations Coffee House to make a Kidz Craft Corner at Conversations, and The Roxy Theatre will be playing A Christmas Story at 6 pm!
All of this will culminate with a beautiful public Christmas tree lit up thanks to the Revelstoke Credit Union.
