Mayor Mark McKee decided to do something a little different this year and recounted John Augustyn's personal story of fighting the Soviets in eastern Poland in 1939. The 92-year-old Revelstokian of Polish originn was a slave labourer in Russia until the Nazi invasion in 1941. Stalin released him and thousands of other Polish soldiers so they could fight the Nazis in Italy and more. It's an amazing story. David F. Rooney photo
Mayor Mark McKee decided to do something a little different this year and recounted Jon Augustyn’s personal story of fighting the Soviets in eastern Poland. The Soviets under Joseph Stalin were allies of Adolf Hitler and used the German invasion, which triggered the Second World War, as an opportunity to snap up Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Outnumbered and out-gunned, Polish soldiers  surrendered in the autumn of 1939. Augustyn, who us now 92 was a slave labourer in Russia until the Nazi invasion in 1941.
