Revelstoke City Council is going to discuss a motion to rescind the Third Reading amendments to the Comprehensive Development Zone Bylaw No. 2088 which could have paved the way for the highway mall to proceed and discuss holding another public hearing into the suitability of this project.
This measure was added on Monday morning to the agenda for Tuesday’s regular Council Meeting, which starts at 3 pm.
There has been a determined public uproar over the proposal by Hall Pacific to build a mall at the Trans-Canada’s junction with Highway 23 North. The project envisioned a new supermarket, major pharmacy and other services.
Stories about this project elicited a substantial flurry of letters to the editor as ell as well as many, many comments on social media after Council approved zoning changes on October 13 that would have cleared the way for the developer to proceed to the development permit stage.
However, it was quickly apparent that there was widespread public opposition that culminated in last week’s brown-paper protest that saw shop owners downtown as well as those at Alpine Mall paper over their windows symbolizing the death of their businesses.
