Here’s a really tough choice: pick the six international films you’d most like to see from a list of 10 possible fantastic flicks being considered by the Multicultural Society’s Movies in the Mountains Series.
This annual film series has proven itself to be a very, very popular cultural offering here in Revelstoke. You can always go to The Roxy to see the latest offerings from Hollywood, but until just a few years ago it was difficult to see anything screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Movies in the Mountains changed all of that and with the opening of the Performing Arts Centre a dinner-and-a-movie date acquired a brand new cachet.
This year’s potential movies are:
Red Army — A smash hit at this year’s Cannes, director Gabe Polsky’s exhilarating documentary chronicles the rise and fall of Soviet hockey in the 1980s. Country: USA/Russia. Languages: English/Russian;
Jimmy’s Hall — This UK film tells he incredible true story of activist Jimmy Gralton and his deportation from Ireland during that country’s Red Scare of the 1930s. Country: United Kingdom. Language: English;
Wild Tales (Relatos Salvajes) — This is director Damián Szifron’s compendium of outrageous, hilarious and truly bizarre anecdotes that paint a subversive, blackly comic portrait of contemporary Argentina. Country: Argentina. Language: Spanish;
Monsoon — This Canadian film is a cinematic journey into the terrain where nature, science, belief and wonder converge in one of the most astonishing and breathtaking landscapes on earth. In English;
Leviathan — Lauded Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev (The Return) won the Best Screenplay prize at Cannes for this painterly, primordial tale about a proud patriarch fighting to protect his family home from a corrupt local official. Country: Russia. Language: Russian;
Timbuktu — Following the recent jihadist takeover of northern Mali, a proud cattle herder comes into fateful conflict with the fundamentalist rulers of the provincial capital, in this luminous, lyrical and poetic drama from the great African filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako. Country: Frane/Mauretaina/Mali. Languages: Arabic/French/Tamashek;
Sunshine Superman — A heart-racing documentary portrait of Carl Boenish, the father of BASE jumping, whose early passion for skydiving led him to ever more spectacular — and dangerous — feats of foot-launched human flight. Country: USA/Norway/United Kingdom. Language: English;
Felix and Meira (Félix et Meira) — A young married woman from Montreal’s Orthodox Jewish community finds freedom from the strictures of her faith through her relationship with a young man who is mourning the death of his estranged father. Country: Canada. Languages: French/English/Yiddish;
Force Majeure — An impulsive decision in a moment of crisis drives a wedge between a husband and wife, in Ruben Östlund’s gripping moral drama that became a critical sensation at Cannes 2014. Country: Sweden/Norway/Denmark/France. LanguageSwedish/English/French;
Samba — A recent migrant to France (Omar Sy) fights to stay in his adopted country with the help of a rookie immigration worker (Charlotte Gainsbourg), in this winning drama from the directors of the breakout hit Les Intouchables. Country: France. Language: French.
