Local gardeners are being encouraged to plant an extra row of vegetables and donate their harvest to Community Connections Food Bank in an effort to get more fresh  vegetables for local families in need.
“People have been bringing us fresh vegetables for years but we’re trying to get more people involved in this program,” says Patti Larson, manager of the Community Connections Food Bank. “We’re hoping that by spreading the word about Plant a Row • Grow a Row we’ll be able to bring in more fresh vegetables for our clients. Our clients mostly get canned fruits and vegetables and that’s good but there’s nothing quite like getting fresh fruit and vegetables.”
In a statement sent to The Current Patti said the Food Bank would especially like:

  • root vegetables, like carrots, turnips and parsnips;
  • broccoli, cabbage;
  • peas, beans, tomatoes;
  • radishes, sweet peppers, summer squash;
  • apples and pears; and
  • lettuce and herbs.
  • Harvest your veggies, wash off the soil, trim the excess leaves, etc., and bring ’em in!
 Donations can be dropped off at the Food Bank, downstairs in the Legion Friday mornings between 8 am and 10 am.

For more information please call Patti Larson at 250-837-2920 ext. 28.

Revelstoke’s first public Direct Current Fast-Charging (DCFC) electric vehicle charging station is now open for business at the Visitor’s Centre.
The 50-kilowatt station can charge your electric vehicle in 20-30 minutes, said a statement from City Hall.
Funded by the provincial Clean Energy Vehicle Program and the federal ecoENERGY Innovation Initiative the $15,400 station is owned by BC Hydro and is leased to the City for $1/month for the next 5 years. It will be maintained and operated by the City.
Starting June 1, customers will pay 35 cents per kilowatt/hour. That means it will cost between $3 and $7 to fully recharge an electric vehicle.
In a statement from City Hall Mayor Mark McKee said Revelstoke is pleased to be a partner in this initiative and he thanked the senior levels of government for promoting electric vehicles.
It also quoted Judy Goodman, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, as saying the Chamber is happy to be a part of this forward-thin king project.

Revelstoke Mountain Resort (RMR) is announcing the appointment of Peter Nielsen as vice-president of operations.
A statement from RMR said that as the longtime general manager of both The Sutton Place Hotel Revelstoke Mountain Resort and Sandman Hotel Revelstoke, Nielsen has been an integral part RMR’s growth since Northland Properties Corporation took ownership in 2008.
In his new role, Nielsen will oversee the ski experience, accommodation and food and beverage operations at the resort.

“Peter’s greatest strengths are his proven leadership skills and his ability to understand our guests’ needs and ensure they are catered to at the highest level,” he said in the statement. “With his demonstrated commitment to the Revelstoke properties I am confident he will thrive in his expanded role.”
Nielsen is excited to take on the new challenge and continue to improve guest experiences across the entire resort.
“We have an extraordinary team of people here, and I can’t wait to get started helping them create even better memories for our clients at what is already one of the world’s best skiing destinations,” said Nielsen who has over 20 years of experience in the resort and hospitality industry. Last year, Pharmasave’s Andrew Moore cycled from Edmonton to Revelstoke. As if that wasn’t a big enough challenge he has come up with a new quest.
“I’m challenging the residents of Revelstoke to bike to work week and if the city comes together and cycles over 20,000 km this year (last year the cycled 16,338 km) I will give a $500 dollar prize and then in 2016 I will cycle to the Arctic Circle where I will stake a bike to work week flag for the residents of Revy,” he said in an e-mail to The Current. “For a population of under 10,000 people I would like to see us in the top 5 communities.”
