Foundation's $38,000 in grants support community life

The Revelstoke Community Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to life in Revelstoke on Thursday, April 23, by presenting 18 grants worth $38,000 to local non-profit groups.
This is an annual event for the foundation, which has been able to support community life in this way for 15 of its 16 years in existence. The foundation uses the interest from its investments — currently estimated at about $2 million — to provide non-profit groups with financial support for specific projects as well as scholarships for deserving Revelstoke Secondary School graduates.
This year’s grants were presented during a brief ceremony at the Best Western Hotel to:

  • Community Connections for its Food Bank (from the Community Fund), Nutrition Education (Canadian Club Fund and Community Fund), and the Summer Day Camp Program (Revelstoke Credit Union Youth Fund);
  • Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy for its programs, consultation and support services and literacy workshops (R. Mickle Family Special Needs Fund and the Community Fund);
  • The Hospice Society for its Palliative Care and PALS training program and other volunteer training (Peoples Drug Mart Health & Welfare Fund and the Community Fund);
  • The Child Care Society for its Healthy Child Development Workshops and family events (Community Fund);
  • The Museum & Archives for its Stories of the Land aboriginal history exhibit (Community Fund);
  • Bear Aware for its Reduction of Unmanaged Fruit as a Bear Attractant Program (Community Fund);
  • The Performing Arts Centre for its upcoming Circus Camp Program (Revelstoke Credit Union  Youth Fund, the Cougar Baseball Fund the R. Lenzi Fund and the Community Fund);
  • The North Columbia Environmental Society for its educational programs (the Environmental Fund and the Community Fund);
  • The Heritage Railway Society for the digitization of the Railway Museum’s historic photography collection (the Community Fund);
  • The United Church for its exterior door replacement project (the Big Bend Heritage Fund and the Community Fund);
  • The Women’s Shelter for its Moving Forward Program in support of women and children leaving violent relationships (the Community Fund);
  • The Humane Society to support veterinary services for the animals in its care (the Community Fund);
  • The Theatre Company to offer workshops enhancing the skills of local directors and actors (the Community Fund);
  • The Multicultural Society to support the 2016 Carousel of Nations (the Community Fund);
  • The Arts Council to support the Heritage Weekend Musical Presentation in September 2015 (the Community Fund); and
  • The Visual Arts Society to help it purchase picnic tables for the new Arts Centre Gardens that are now under construction (the Revelstoke Mountain Resort Fund and the Community Fund).

These are all extremely worthwhile projects that enrich the life of our city. We would be a far poorer place without the Community Foundation.
