The Columbia Basin Trust has agreed to cover the cost of air travel and accommodations for one person from each community in the Basin working on poverty reduction, to attend the first-ever National Poverty Reduction Summit in Ottawa in May.
Social Development Coordinator Jill Zacharias told members of the Poverty Reduction Committee that she will be proud to represent Revelstoke at the summit.
She said she’d also like Revelstoke to participate a Community Interviews initiative. These could be formatted around a set of common questions posed to people with life experience, people who work in poverty reduction, politicians, business people, volunteers, young people, seniors or anyone who would like to share their responses:
- What does a vibrant community mean to you?
- What is vibrant about your community, your province, your country?
- How do we create vibrant communities for everyone?
People’s answers could be captured on video, or audio or photos or art.

The next month will see a couple of Chamber of Commerce-related events that will likely be of interest to local business people.
Next Tuesday, February 17, there will be a Members’ Lunch at the Taco Club on Second Street East.
And, starting on Thursday, February 26, the Chamber will begin sponsoring a Business After Business social hour at the Royal Canadian Legion on the last Thursday of every month from 5 pm until 7 pm. This is intended as an informal drop-in social for business owners and managers to network over drinks and food on the last Thursday.
The Chamber has also scheduled its Annual General Meeting for Wednesday, March 18, at the Regent fro noon until 1 pm.

The Revelstoke Snowmobile Club is holding a free snowmobile safety day for children aged 10-18 on Sunday, February 22, on Boulder Mountain.
There will be safety presentations from Avalanche Canada, the Snowmobile Club, Revelstoke Search and Rescue and the RCMP. Bring your children, grandchildren, niece, nephew or a favorite little friend up for the day. There will be pizza and prizes at the end of the day at the cabin. The Forum for Women Entrepreneurs and the success stories of local female entrepreneurs in BC is to be celebrated at the FWE Gala in Vancouver on February 16.
FWE is one of BC’s leading supporters for women entrepreneurs. One of their main initiatives is an annual E-series program intended to give women entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed. Of this program 89% of past participants have remained in business (way above the Canadian average of 50%) and the program has been attended by notable women such as Caterina Fake, the founder of Flickr.
Last year, the annual program had over 60% attendance by entrepreneurs outside of Vancouver. To support these participants the FWE organizes a Gala, with proceeds going to support these aspiring entrepreneurs with their program fees and travel costs.
This year’s annual fundraising gala is focused on technology and social media to help grow a business. The expert panel includes:
- Ryan Holmes (the Founder and CEO of Hootsuite)
- Jamie Michaels (the Head of Brand Strategy at Twitter Canada); and
- Michele Romanow (Co-Founder of Buytopia.ca and Snapsaves, which was acquired by Groupon).
