In case you are interested, there have been some water releases over the Revelstoke Dam spillway recently, says BC Hydro’s Jennifer Walker-Larsen.
“Most have occurred overnight although we did spill during the day on Sunday May 18,” she said in an e-mail to The Current. “We expect these periodic water releases over the Revelstoke Dam spillway to continue until the end of spring freshet (mid-June 2014).”
Walker-Larsen, BC Hydro’s Stakeholder Engagement and Community Relations Advisor, said spill releases are made to maintain the minimum fish flow from Revelstoke Dam during low demand periods.
BC Hydro has been providing a minimum flow of at least 141.6 cubic metres per second (5,000 cubic feet per second) from Revelstoke Dam under the Columbia River Water Use Plan since December 2010.
“Spill releases are most likely to occur overnight during the week and during the day on weekends,” she said. “Spill volumes are expected to stay well below volumes released during the high water conditions of 2012.

Beginning June 2, residents will see a few new disposal fees at the landfills and transfer stations.
A statement from Carmen Fennell, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District’s waste reduction facilitator, said a $10 per tonne charge will be implemented for disposal of clean soil (accepted only at landfills), and fees will be charged for new separation categories of wood waste: chipped wood waste; clean wood waste; and treated wood waste.
- Chipped wood waste will cost $15 per tonne at the scaled sites or $5 per cubic metre at the unscaled sites.
- Clean wood waste and treated wood waste will cost $35 per tonne at scaled sites or $5 per cubic metre at unscaled sites.
“The fee for wood waste disposal has not changed,” Fennell said. “What has changed is the incentive to keep dirty and clean wood separate.”
Also, the new $15-per-mattress recycling fee begins June 2. Mattresses pose significant operational challenges when disposed of in landfills. The decision to recycle mattresses, rather than burying them will not only save valuable space in the landfill, but will also allow for the recovery of the resources mattress are comprised of, including wood and metal.
“We have contracted with a company from Mara to collect and disassemble the mattresses so the wood and metal can be recovered and recycled,” she said.
The fee charged for the disposal will cover the dismantling costs. Anyone who has a large volume of mattresses to dispose of may be able to arrange for a direct pick up with the recycling company by calling the CSRD for more information.

The Revelstoke Community Foundation is holding a very important Annual General Meeting at noon on Tuesday, June 10, in the boardroom of the Business & Visitor Information Centre.
A statement from the foundation said there are two very important resolutions to be discussed regarding changes to the Not For Profit Canada Corporations Act.
The old act for federally incorporated non-profits will be phased out in October 2014 and the existing corporation will be dissolved. The Foundation’s board of directors registered the Revelstoke Community Foundation as a not-for-profit corporation under the BC Societies Act on July 4, 2013.
The statement said there will actually be two Annual General Meetings:
“The first meeting will be held to approve the financial statements as of December 31, 2013, then transfer the assets to the newly registered society and dissolve the federally incorporated not-for-profit corporation. At this time your membership with the old Revelstoke Community Foundation will expire.
“The second meeting will be held by the new Revelstoke Community Foundation members to receive the assets being transferred from the dissolved not for profit corporation. If you wish to become a member of the new society, please complete the attached application for membership and return it to our office at PO Box 2398 by mail, or drop off at the address above.”
