A small group of dog owners gathered at Conversations on Monday evening to talk about the possibility of organizing an off-leash dog park for Revelstoke.
The people who attended the meeting may have been small in number — just eight men and women — but they have good ideas and may even have the stamina that will be required to accomplish the goal of establishing a dedicated off-leash park.
The group has a Facebook page, which boasts 144 members, but they still have a way to go. Among the tasks they’ll need to accomplish are:
- Establish themselves as a registered society;
- Identify potential off-leash park locations;
- Locate potential revenue sources such as the Columbia Basin Trust, the Community Foundation, the Credit Union and local banks;
- Meet with Laurie Donato, Revelstoke’s director for Parks, Recreation and Culture; and
- Lobby City Councillors.
The people who attended Monday’s meeting think a parcel of City-owned land in the Big Eddy along Griffiths Road or lad beside the Selkirk Saddle Club may be ideal locations. But establishing a dedicated off-leash park could take a couple of years. It would also cost money that the City would be loathe to spend.
Among the potential costs identified at Monday’s meeting were things such as fencing, doggy doo-doo collection stations and other items and services.
