Revelstoke has numerous members that standout, shine and work towards a common goal of health, happiness and equality. Some may be well known in the community, have a high profile in our quaint little town while others work diligently to better the quality of life and for other women quietly.
Member of Parliament Wayne Stetski is calling for nominations for the 2018 Governor General’s Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case. Each year, these awards recognize Canadians, including youth, who have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of gender equality.
Since 1979, over 200 people across Canada have received the Governor General’s Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case and recognized women who have helped change the course of history for women in Canada. Many women play a key role in that effort which is essential to gender equality, creating and empowering one’s self and inspire others to make a difference in this world.
“In Kootenay-Columbia we know that gender equality is not just the right thing to do, but it is the smart thing to do – for our economy, for our families and for our society. But it doesn’t happen on its own; it takes persistence, commitment and sustained effort from all of us to make gender equality a reality,” says Stetski. “Fortunately, people in our region are working every day to do just that. This year, let’s recognize their tremendous efforts by nominating a neighbour, colleague, or friend for a Persons Case Award.”
Remembering the Famous Five:
In 1927, one question was asked to the Supreme Court of Canada that changed history and championed the process of equality; “Does the word “Person” in Section 24 of the British North America Act include female persons?” It took five weeks of lengthy debates until the Supreme Court decided that “persons” did not include women.
Five passionate women; Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Lousie McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards did not give up the fight and took their case to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London, England which at the time was Canada’s highest court of appeal. It was there that these five powerhouses won the right for women to serve in the senate as well as changing the way of social thinking when it came to women’s rights.
These five ladies were pioneers in social change. Women all over Canada continue to strive for change and growth. With that said which woman in this fine community inspires you?
