Avalanche claims an Austrian skier’s life

A 52-year-old Austrian skier caught in a backcountry avalanche in the Goldstream area 100 kilometres north of town at 3 pm on Monday afternoon, March 6, has died of cardiac arrest, says a statement from the Revelstoke RCMP.

“The male was being transported by helicopter to the Queen Victoria Hospital (via the Revelstoke Airport and BC Ambulance Service) in cardiac arrest as a result of being buried in an avalanche,” the statement said. “Current information is that a group of five skiers were accompanied with a guide and were negotiating down the mountain in intervals. The guide and another male had proceeded, and when the third male began skiing, the avalanche was triggered. The remaining two skiers managed to avoid the avalanche.”

The name of the deceased is being withheld until all family are advised of his death.
