Can Revelstoke become the Cupcake Capital of BC?

Perhaps it’s time we acknowledged a new truth about our community: Revelstoke is on track to become The Cupcake Capital of the BC Interior. Okay, maybe there isn’t really such a title but there should be… especially when you consider that Big Mountain Kitchen & Linen has sold more than 800 cupcakes in two weeks, some of which are displayed on trays by Big Mountain owner Nicole Cherlet (left) and Pip & Dex Cupcakery's Dayna VanOverbeke. Perhaps it’s time we acknowledged a new truth about our community: Revelstoke could become The Cupcake Capital of  BC.

Okay, maybe there isn’t really such a title but there should be… especially when you consider that Big Mountain Kitchen & Linen has sold more than 863 cupcakes in two weeks. And the shop hasn’t even officially started promoting its new line of high-quality treats, all designed and created by the Pip & Dex Custom Cake and Cupcakery.

What’s more — if you haven’t heard by now — The Cupcakery is officially unveiling its delicious wares at Big Mountain Kitchen on Saturday, August 20, between 10 am and 5 pm. Now that’s an opening your taste buds won’t want to miss!

“We’re definitely selling out every day,” Big Mountain proprietor Nicole Cherlet said in an interview on Monday, August 15. “The thing I keep hearing from people is that when you get something as gorgeous as these are you don’t expect them to taste so good.”

Nicole has amply demonstrated over the last few years that she has superlative taste. She recognized that the high quality cupcakes Dayna VanOverbeke designed and produced through her Pip & Dex Custom Cakes and Cupcakery would appeal to her clientel. For her part, Dayna who burst onto the custom-cake scene after taking a Wilton cake-decorating course, needed  partner with real sales savvy. Nicole’s subsequent invitation to Dayna to market her delicious products through the Big Mountain shop on Mackenzie Avenue was eagerly accepted.

The cupcakes are slightly larger than the normal commercial cupcakes you might purchase at a supermarket, but not so large that you’d feel like a complete oink if you ate two of them at one sitting.

“I did want them a little bit bigger — but not too big,” Dayna said, adding that you don’t have to purchase them one at a time. “The six packs are very popular. A lot of people order them and take them to the office for a communal snack.”

Given their propensity to sell out each day it may not be long before customers start lining up at the shop door…
