Heron’s death touches a Current reader

Like many people whose lives are enriched by the birds and animals they recognize a being part of their local animal kingdom, Current reader Susan Holland found her life was enriched by the familiar presence of a blue heron. “I have been watching a single blue heron on and off for two weeks in a small wetland near Kokanee Springs Golf Resort in Crawford Bay,” she said in an e-mail on Sunday, July 17. “On today's walk I found the heron in its usual place but dead floating in the water.” She said there were no signs of physical trauma. But encountering the animal’s carcass floating in water near the shore affected her. “The body could probably be retrieved by someone with waders if anyone was curious about how/why it died. As for me, well I am just very sad." Photos courtesy of Susan Holland
