News briefs about helping our community

The Revelstoke Tim Horton’s restaurant held another amazing Camp Day last week. Judging by the grin on Mayor mark McKee’s face it was a lot of fun, too. Franchise owners Donna and Brian Lecompt put our a big thank you to all the volunteers that came out to help sling coffee with us and raise money for deserving kids from our community to go to the Tim Hortons Childrens Foundation Camp this summer. The Revelstoke Railway Museum desperately needs a new coat of paint on its exterior.

That’s a costly job — $30,000 to be exact — and Jennifer Dunkerson, the museum’s executive director, is hoping generous local people will help out with donations to purchase cans of paint.

“Each paint can is worth $50,” she said in an e-mail to The Revelstoke Current. “Your donation is eligible for a tax receipt and an image of a paint can with your name on it will be displayed in Gallery I next to our Mikado locomotive, the 5468.”

You can contact the museum by e-mail at railway@telus.net or call 250-837-6060 for more information.

Speaking of dire straits, the Food Bank desperately needs donations of food and/or cash to make ends meet this summer.

“This is a critical time of year at the Community Connections Food Bank,” Patti Larson, Community Connections’ director for Outreach Services, said in an e-mail to The Current on Wednesday. “Our shelves are getting very bare and we are having to purchase more and more food to fill the needs of our community.”

Fortunately, we live in a generous community.  And this year Telus is stepping up to help out. You can drop off bags of food and/or cash donations at the Revelstoke Mobility store at 103 First Street East between now and June 12. Telus says it will match the amount collected with a donation of up to $1,000.
