There’s a lot happening this week to cement local progress with our Syrian refugee programs.
If you have some time please cone out and support these events!
The Multicultural Society is having their annual potluck this Thursday, April 7 at 5:30 at the United Church and has specifically invited RFR members to come (with a Syrian dish!). RFR Chairwoman Rana Nelson says she is planning on attending and asks that anyone else likely to attend please e-mail her at rana.onwords@gmail.com so “we can plan together what we will bring.”
Amanda Hathorn-Geary has been organizing events over the next week or so with Anita Wing Lee, a humanitarian activist who has been travelling around North America raising the profile of the refugee situation and funds for it, and volunteering in Greece. Half of the money raised from the events in Revelstoke will go to RFR and half to Anita’s organization, SoulFam. All events by donation (see the attached poster below):
Wednesday, April 6 from 7-9 at Sangha Bean – a talk on the refugee crisis;
Friday, April 9 from 4-5 at Mountain Co-Lab (above Royal LePage) – innovation night, with the topic: What would happen if we stopped worrying about money and careers and woke up every day asking, “How Can I Serve?”
Saturday, April 9 at Balu Yoga – a session on answering your life’s calling; and
Sunday, April 10 at Balu Yoga – a session on turning fear into inner peace and outer success.
If anyone can help Amanda put up posters on Tuesday to spread the word, please email her at getalifeatsea@gmail.com (some are already up).
The RFR Committee is going to schedule a time for the ESL class at Okanagan College. If you have not put your name on the list for ESL and would like to be involved with teaching the Almastou family, please let Rana know by this Friday, April 8.
Given the recent information on CBC that things may have slowed down in processing refugee applications, Rana has asked for an ufdated timeline on th Almastou family’s arrival.
“When I hear something, I’ll let you know,” she said. Nut this news just came in: It looks like we’ve secured a house; just ironing out some final details!”
That’s a huge step ahead!
