BC Hydro replenishes gravel in the Columbia

People out and about in Revelstoke these past few days may have noticed dump trucks loaded with gravel rumbling through town. The trucks poured a total of 5,000 cubic metres of gravel and dirt into the Columbia River at the Centennial Park snow dump site, according to BC Hydro spokesperson Carly Moran. By pouring the gravel into the river, BC Hydro is attempting to renew the gravel bars that would naturally exist along the river. “Because the Columbia River is dammed, there isn’t the gravel washing downstream that there normally would be,” Moran said, adding that the gravel and other sediment provide habitat for various forms of aquatic life. The project, which ended today, was led by Angela Korsa, Natural Resource Specialist for BC Hydro. Laura Stovel photo
