Summer Reading Club kids are real dam builders

Structural engineer Vanessa Morrow visited with the public library’s summer reading club last week and taught the kids about dam building. “The kids started off with a slide show of four different types of dam structures; of which the Mica and Revelstoke dams were examples,” said Community Librarian Kendra Runnalls. “In small groups the kids went off to actually build small-scale replicas of the dams using clay, rocks, Lego, and even sticks and dirt for a beaver dam. Each child had a chance to work together in a small group to construct each of the four types of dams that they learned about. The dams were tested using water and for the most part succeeded! Structural engineer Vanessa Morrow visited with the public library’s summer reading club last week and taught the kids about dam building. It was very appropriate as “Build It” is the theme of this year’s club activities.
