Has that stench evaporated? Our mayor is keeping his fingers crossed…

Mayor Mark McKee had his fingers crossed on Wednesday as, for what may be the first time in weeks, people actually began calling and sending messages to City Hall that they are NOT smelling any vile odours form the sewage treatment plant. "I have my fingers crossed but I think we've turned the corner on this issue," he said. for the last year an on-agan/off-again stench from the plant hd plagued residents of the Southside neighbourhood and the City initiated a mechanical solution in the headworks building that Engineering and Development Services Director Mike Thomas had hoped would curb the foul odours. However, earlier this so-far unseasonably hot spring bacteria in one of the sewage treatment cells began dying off, which increased the smell from the plant. Council decided to spend up to $120,000 more on trying to fix that dead cell. It seems like both of these efforts have worked and no one... keep your fingers crossed... in Southside needs a gas mask to go outdoors. David F. Rooney photo
