A fistful of art

Jackie Pendergast, chairwoman of the City's Public Art Committee, brought a fist full of bronze leaves to Tuesday's City Council meeting. The bronze maple leaves are samples of the 300 - 400 individual leaves that will be carefully welded together to form a seemingly wind-blown swirl of autumn leaves in sculptor John McKinnon's sculpture Blowing in the Wind. Council approved a committee recommendation that it authorize the $50,000 commission for the City's next major piece of public art. The sculpture, which will be installed at the Visual Arts Centre by mid-October, is being created with Resort Municipality Initiative money — not funds ponied up by local taxpayers. David F.
