An early morning 911 call about a commercial structure fire at Downie Timber Ltd. brought a swift response from Revelstoke Fire Rescue Services.
“Upon arrival, fire crews found heavy fire damage in an area of the millwright area and light smoke on the second floor,” Fire Chief Rob Girard said in a statement issued after the 6:08 am fire. “The sprinkler system did the majority of the suppression work.”
Twenty-two firefighters responded to the alarm and concentrated on the walls above the fire’s point-of-origin to check for fire extension and extinguish hot spots, he said.
Firefighters, supported by one fire truck and a command vehicle, extinguished and overhauled the fire in just under an hour. No one was injured in the fire.
“I am really pleased with the results of the sprinkler suppression in the fire area,” said the Chief, “We realize how important this mill is to the community.”
As to the cause of the fire, Girard saidd that the fire is under investigation by the Fire Inspector.
