RSS's young musicians hold a varied and lively concert

By Leslie Savage
A concert held on Thursday, March 26, provided an evening of lively music from band classes at the high school. The Junior Band of Grades 8-9 played The Lion Sleeps Tonight, Coldwater Creek, Sweet Caroline and Pachelbel’s Canon under the imaginative direction of band teacher Jim Redding. The Grades 9-10 Intermediate Band played Carry On Wayward Sun, Beyond the Hills, Baby Elephant Walk — during which time a mystery baby elephant danced through the aisles of the Performing Arts Theatre—and Pueblo.
The music continued with RSS’s stellar jazz band, with Footloose, 25 or 6 to 4 and September. Then student Daniel Blackie gave us a solo with guitar — a song he wrote himself called No Such Thing. The finale pieces were from the Senior Band: A Night on Bald Mountain, Aladdin, a Cajun Folk Song, Sedona, and the formidable Lion King.
Some of these pieces are challenging for any youth band, and the dedication and musicality of our students and their conductor are inspiring. The selection process for any group of musicians is always an issue, and the concert repertoire was lively, varied and interesting.
Here is a selection of photos of this marvelous event courtesy of RSS Vice-Principal Andy Pfeiffer:
