Jordan Snider and Ruby Serrouya went undefeated this weekend in Langley, BC, to capture gold medals in the Novice category at the Junior Provincials.
Serrouya was competing in the U10 age group, and Snider in U14. Snider’s gold medal match was especially exciting, because it was tied until the last 10 seconds, when he threw his opponent and nearly pinned him. Caine McCabe also brought home some hardware, with a record of 1 win and 2 losses, enough to capture the bronze medal in the U14 Junior Category. His matches were very competitive, with a comeback win in the first match when he pinned his opponent, and 2 close matches to finish off the day. Although McCabe initiated many of the throws in his last matches, his opponents proved skilled at the counter-attack. For Serrouya and Snider, next year will be much tougher since they will be the young year in their age group and will also move up to a higher skill category.
Assistant coaches Corbett McCaibe and Ted Allain also fought, capturing a silver and bronze, respectively. Allain hasn’t fought in over 5 years, so this event brought back old memories for him. As a brown belt, he has the second highest rank in the Revelstoke Judo Club. He was using this tournament as an opportunity to accumulate points towards his next belt level.
Because the club has more than doubled in size over the last two years to 57 members, having more experienced coaches has become a necessity. Liam McCabe also made the trip but had no opponents in his weight/skill class. Head Coach, Sensei Cornelius Suchy, was very pleased with all 6 competitors he sent to the tournament. “I was impressed with the number of kids we brought from our club and how they performed, including the 2 over-40 competitors who had the guts to go against some 20-yr old team BC athletes. Just facing off against some of these international competitors takes courage.”
