Cross Country skiing came to Revelstoke in a big way this weekend in the form of a Teck BC Cup. And the gods must surely love cross-country skiing! The rains held off, temperatures weren’t as balmy as predicted, and miracle upon miracles: the highway stayed open long enough for athletes to arrive and depart without undo misery.
371 athletes from British Columbia, Alberta, a large Australian contingent, and a few Japanese and Norwegian skiers competed in both classic and skate disciplines. Revelstoke is a popular cross country skiing venue as well as alpine, now that the word is out that about the terrain, snow conditions, and organizational capacity this Teck BC Cup had outstanding attendance.
Highlights for the club were many top 3 finishes in the atom and pee wee categories. This shows the strength and depth of the children’s programming provided by Revelstoke Nordic Ski Club. Overall the club had 71 skiers competing from in masters categories right down to 5 year old atoms. As well the community of Revelstoke stepped up to be volunteers, with about 100 volunteers helping out over the course of the weekend and during race preparations in the months beforehand.
Teck is the title sponsor for this and most other cross country ski races in British Columbia; generous funding allows robust and well executed events throughout the winter. BC Cup races exceed most other western provinces in organization and professionalism. As well, Flowt, Skookum, the Modern Bake Shop, the Columbia Basin Trust, Revelstoke Accommodation Association, Terra Firm Farms, and very popular among drinking age athletes- Begbie Brewery generously donated prizes.
It was also a very heavy VIP weekend. Appearances and performances from national and international athletes included local biathlon Olympian Nikki Norrie (Nagano), 3 time biathlon Olympian Zina Kocher (Sochi, Vancouver, Torino), National Para-nordic sit ski champion Emily Suchy, and retired national level mountain biker Brendan MacIntosh.
Notable podium finishes among the competitive categories included top 3 results from: Alana Brittin, Elizabeth Elliott, Francesco Morrone, Nelson and Alexandra Luxmoore.
Athletes are now preparing for the Midget Championships on Vancouver Island and the National Championships in Thunder Bay.
