A hugely successful day for the Humane Society

By David F. Rooney

The Revelstoke & District Humane Society had a terrific day on Saturday, September 13, as about 100 people flocked to their shelter on Victoria Road for an open house they hoped would help spur animal adoptions.

The open house was a great success,” said RDHS President Shannon van Goor.  “We had close to 100 people come out to view the animals, make donations, or become volunteers.  Since we started advertising the open house we have adopted out 10 animals with about another 5 pending applications and some other people who have gone away to talk it over with other members of their family.  The support from the community has been great and we got great feedback about the good health of our animals and the cleanliness of the shelter.”

Kudos to the RDHS and its volunteers for their work to improve the welfare of animal companions in our community. Here are a few photos from the event:

Kirstin Johnson brought her dog, Ella, with her to visit the shelter. Ella, a Newfoundland, is a rescue dog. She was found running free near the Skyline and was rescued by a compassionate local family who brought her to the shelter where she was cleaned up and, eventually, adopted by Kirstin. She's a lovely girl and lucky to be alive. If not for the people who found and rescued her she could have been struck and killed by a vehicle on the Trans Canada Highway or devoured by wild animals.
