In Pictures: Sunday and Monday at the Glacier Challenge

By David F. Rooney

The 27th Annual Glacier Challenge came to a close on Monday, August 4, with few injuries or arrests and — for the most part — a lot of happy ball players.

“We’ve had a really good time here,” said Dana, a young player from Sylvan Lake, Alberta. She said this was the first time she has played here and she can’t get over how nice Revelstoke is.

“We’ll be back next year.”

Meanwhile, RCMP carefully patrolled the event and while there were a couple of arrests there was nothing serious. Nor were there any serious injuries. That’s pretty good for an pubic spectacle that brought 80 teams with a total of at least 1,114 players to town.

Here is a selection of photos from the last two days of the tournament:

Sunday evening saw most official games done by early evening. A few diehards hung around the fields tossing a ball around and at the Industrial Field there was a game in progress but it was the umpires not the players who attracted the most attention and laughter. David F. Rooney photo

These were the oddball umps at whom the watching crowd was hooting and hollering. And, no, that thing sticking out buddy's union suit isn't a real trouser snake. We don't know who these characters but they were well-lubricated and having a heck of a good time pandering to the crowd, when they weren't making some, er, ah, interesting calls on the diamond. The Rotary Club reportedly did pretty well with their beer and cooler sales this year. They even managed to run out of Twisted Tea and Palm Bay coolers. David F. Rooney photo

Things were very quiet by noon on Sunday. Some people had already started to leave while others wandered by the score boards to see who won or lost to who. David F. Rooney photo
