Swimmer missing after leaping from the Laforme Creek Bridge

Investigators are searching for a 28-year-old Coldstream man who reportedly jumped off the Laforme Creek Bridge on Highway 23 North and never surfaced.

Staff Sgt. Kurt Grabinsky said in a statement that police, Search and Rescue personnel and BC Ambulance paramedics responded to a 7:33 pm report about a missing swimmer.

They were told the man jumped off the Laforme Creek Bridge. That structure, located 20 km north of town, is approximately 80 feet above the surface of the water, which is about 50 feet deep at that location.

“Revelstoke RCMP, with assistance from Revelstoke Search and Rescue, immediately commenced a search of the area for any signs of the man which included the use of an RCMP vessel,” Grabinsky said in the statement.

At 9:45 pm, the search was suspended for the night due to darkness and the associated risks to emergency personnel but the search will continue in the morning.

The man’s name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
