Hydro records 1% energy saving during Earth Hour… but no stats for Revy!

British Columbians saved 65 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by one percent during Earth Hour last night – the equivalent of turning off about 1.4 million lights, BC Hydro said Sunday, March 30.

That’s a little over half of last year’s savings.

Oddly, there were no results for Revelstoke. BC Hydro was at a loss to explain how that came to be. A spokesman said the data may have been flawed in some way.

The Earth Hour event, held on Saturday, March 29, encourages individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics to demonstrate support for climate change reduction efforts. Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World Wildlife Fund.

BC Hydro customers can view their energy use for Saturday evening by logging onto MyHydro – their online account at bchydro.com/myhydro. They can get an hourly breakdown of their electricity use.

BC Hydro provides tools, resources and incentives to help people conserve year-round. Earth Hour savings by year (reduction in overall provincial electricity load):

  • 2014: 1 per cent
  • 2013: 1.95 per cent
  • 2012: 1.67 per cent
  • 2011: 1.8 per cent
