Nature’s floral bounty is gorgeous

By David F. Rooney

We are lucky to live in a beautiful part of Canada. There are affirmations of that statement almost every where we look this spring and summer.

For the past couple of weeks I have been taking photos of some of the gorgeous trees and flowers popping up around town.

Lyn Kaulback knows I love flowering gardens and kindly invited me by to photograph some of the blooms in her backyard. Thanks for that Lyn.

This is not a definitive list of Revelstoke’s flowering landscapes but I do hope it will inspire us all make our city bloom. If you have some gorgeous plants you’d like to show everyone in town please send them to drooney1@telus.net as JPEGs.

Here are some of the lovely plants I’ve seen around town — not all of them in people’s gardens:

There are lot of gardens in Revelstoke. Some are humble others are elaborate and glorious. But no matter how you classify them, they add colour and vibrancy to our small city. This paving stone is in Denny and Lyn Kaulback's back garden. David F. Rooney photo

Creeping thyme makes for a colourful living carpet in Lyn's back yard. Creeping thyme is fast-growing and is a useful plant for covering patches of ground that might otherwise be unsightly. David F. Rooney photo

Irises always attract my eye. These beauties are from Lyn's garden. There are many different varieties and they are all gorgeous. David F. Rooney photo

How about white bleeding hearts. Bleeding hearts are generally regarded as, like hollyhocks and grandmother's blue bells, old-fashioned flowers. Be that as it may they are hardy and fast-growing addition's to anyone's garden, whether they are white or pink. David F. Rooney photo

And it's heard to beat the glory of a mature dogwood, like this one on Third Street East. It's probably the finest in the city. David F. Rooney photo

There are a lot of gorgeous rhododendrons in Revelstoke, but this one in the Anderson's yard on Connaught Avenue near Second Street West is one of the largest and most beautiful i have ever seen. It's easily 12 feet tall. David F. Rooney photo
