SD 19 Superintendant Mike Hooker has announced the appointment of Yanping Wang of Surrey as the new principal of Begbie View Elementary School starting on August 1.
“I am very pleased to announce that Yanping Wang (pronounced Wong) has accepted the principalship of Begbie View Principal effective August 1,” he said in an e-mail. “Yanping has many years of administrative experience in our province.”
He said that since 2001, she has served as an elementary principal in Surrey, with assignments at three schools during that time ranging in size from 300 to 480 students, including four years as a Level One inner city school. Prior to that she spent 6 years in the Boundary/Kettle Valley area serving as principal of Midway Elementary and then of Greenwood Elementary, schools of similiar size to Begbie View.
She replaces Acting Principal Derek Woodhurst who was brought in to replace the popular Shan Jorgenson-Adams who had to resign in order to return to Alberta to care for her very sick husband.
Hooker said Yanping’s husband, Nian Zhu, was recently appointed as the District Principal of Student Support Services.
“Yanping traveled to Revelstoke, with her husband, Nian, for his interview,” Hooker said. “Yanping explained to our selection committee that she loves her school and her work in Surrey and it was not until she did some more research into the Revelstoke School District that she made the decision to apply for the BVE principalship.
“We are very pleased she did. Colleagues and parents who have worked with Yanping describe her as student centered, thoughtful, honest, highly principled and intelligent. Her commitment to ensuring that students are connected with school, and her track record of respecting individuals while working to build a school identity came through clearly in the selection process. Please join me in welcoming Yanping to Revelstoke.”
