The glorious past of outhouse racing!

With the advent of Spirit Fest 2013 on Thursday The Current is pleased to present you with a taste of past winter festivals, specifically the Outhouse Races of 1977.

While Outhouse Races have touch of history here in Revelstoke, visitors and new residents may be unfamiliar with them. Here then is a peek back in time courtesy of Michael and Jackie Morris.

“I have attached three photos taken in 1977 by my husband Michael Morris,” Jackie said in an e-mail to The Current. “You are welcome to use them if you like, to give some context to the history of the Spirit Fest Outhouse Races. They are of the National Parks’ entry at the 1977 winter festival (not sure what we used to call the festival back then, and we worked for National Parks, not Parks Canada.”

If any other Current readers have photos from past winter festivals they’d like to share please send them via e-mail to drooney1@telus.net and I’ll put them online.

Here are Jackie’s and Michael’s photos:

Here's the men's team from National Parks. They used the same outhouse. Left to right they are: Pierre Compte, Buzz Crowston, Peter Kimmel, Bill Gallagher, and John Woods. Michael Morris photo

This photo shows me and Marcia Woods in the race. Not visible is Josie Kimmel, who was our passenger inside the outhouse. The other entry in the photo, with the red crown painted on it, and our chief competition, was the ladies’ team from the Regent Pub. They were all dressed up like floozies. I can't remember who won the race but we all had fun! Michael Morris photo
